There's a revolution happening...

Since the deadly collapse of the Rana Plaza complex in Bangladesh on the 24th April 2013 a movement, a revolution has started. This week, if you see people wearing their clothes inside out it might be on purpose...

The 'Fashion Revolution' was founded by Carry Somers and Orsola de Castro in response to the loss of life in the Rana Plaza disaster and in the three years since its inception it has become a worldwide movement. Their main belief is "that fashion can be made in a safe, clean and beautiful way. Where creativity, quality, environment and people are valued equally" - you can't argue with that...

Fashion Revolution are asking people to ask themselves this:

Who made my clothes?

It's really not easy to answer this question a lot of the time but when you buy locally-made clothing or from an ethical brand you know you're heading in the right direction.

The fact that more and more people are asking the question is helping the major brands to understand that people do care how their clothes are made and by whom. To this end thousands of people worldwide are putting their clothes on inside out this week to push home the message that it really does matter who made your clothes.

You can join the revolution on social media using the hashtags #FashRev and #whomademyclothes to push those in the fashion industry to improve manufacturing standards throughout the world.

My slight issue with this fabulous initiative is the word 'fashion'.  Personally, and people who know me will back this up, I'd rather buy something I'll like and wear for years than for one season. I'm also very partial to a charity shop bargain; that way even though the garment was probably made pre-Fashion Revolution it is being used for as long as possible. Where I see the words 'ethical fashion' I always quietly whisper 'sustainable style' and hope that over time the world will head in that direction.

Anyway, as an award winning, sustainable business you can imagine that we care very much about how we make what we make.  At Turtle Doves HQ we work hard to create a happy, safe environment buzzing with creativity.

We take time and effort in what we do designing products which we think will be useful, loved and lasting and we make sure that we use up as much of the garments we recycle as possible...we don't throw anything away!

We are really grateful for the support we've had since we started the business in 2009. Here I am with Nettie, Issy, Ellie & Emma, very proud to be able to say to our customers, on behalf of the whole Turtle Doves team, 'We made your clothes!'
